Elkhart art group to continue graffiti program

ELKHART – An Elkhart program allowing graffiti artists to add artwork to the exterior of a city building will continue despite vandalism and concerns that the work might include gang symbols.

The Elkhart Art League began the program in June. It allows artists to decorate the exterior of the league’s building.

But vandals last week spray-painted the building’s roof and damaged a chimney.

Art league vice president Ellen Ridenour tells The Elkhart Truth the league’s board of directors decided to continue the program because its benefits outweigh some of the problems.

Officials will monitor the artwork to ensure inappropriate drawings are covered up. Police have added more patrols to the area.
