BIRDSEYE, Ind. – A new triathlon that debuts in southern Indiana next month is raising money for efforts to educate the public about the importance of hawks, owls and other birds of prey.
The inaugural Aug. 24 Patoka Lake Triathlon benefits the Patoka Lake area’s red-tailed hawks and its eastern screech owls.
Race Director Dana Reckelhoff says the money generated from race fees could also help add a bald eagle to a program that educates visitors about the role flesh-eating birds play in nature.
The triathlon is open to anyone age 15 and older. Participants swim 500 yards in the park’s reservoir, followed by a 12.8-mile bike ride along paved roads and a 5-kilometer run along groomed gravel roads and a paved bike trail.
