Felony counts filed after holdup, chase

Two men face felony charges after allegedly robbing a gas station last week in northeast Fort Wayne and leading police on a high-speed chase.

Frederick Freeman, 41, was charged with robbery and pointing a firearm, and Anthony Martin, 33, was charged with robbery and resisting law enforcement.

Early July 23, Freeman went into the Shell station at Maplecrest Road and East State Boulevard, pointed a gun at the clerk and demanded cash, according to court papers.

Freeman left with the money and got into a Ford Explorer driven by Martin. A police officer later spotted the Explorer more than two miles away at Coliseum Boulevard and Lake Avenue. The officer tried to pull over the vehicle, but Martin did not stop and led police on a high-speed pursuit, court papers stated.

The vehicle chase lasted at least 2 1/2 miles before ending at Hayden Street and South Anthony Boulevard, where Freeman and Martin bailed out of the Explorer. Both were quickly captured.

Near where Freeman was found hiding in bushes, police recovered $198, court papers stated.

Freeman, of the 4500 block of Atwood Drive, and Martin, of the 200 block of East Masterson Avenue, were being held without bond Tuesday at the Allen County Jail on violations in unrelated cases.
