Restaurateur to help raise ‘Backpack’ cash

World-renowned restaurateur and chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten will bring his talents to Fort Wayne this month to help raise money and awareness for children’s nutrition.

Sycamore Hills Golf Club will host Vongerichten on Aug.13 as part of the annual Blessings in a Backpack fundraiser. Blessings in a Backpack’s program strives to help meet the nutritional requirements of children in need by providing weekend meals and generating public awareness about child hunger. All proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the Fort Wayne chapter of Blessings in a Backpack.

Vongerichten is known for his focus on exotic and aromatic flavors of the East. He is responsible for the operation of 38 three- and four-star restaurants worldwide, and his ABC Kitchen in New York won Best New Restaurant of 2011 from the James Beard Foundation. He has authored cookbooks including “Home Cooking with Jean-Georges: My Favorite Simple Recipes.”

Trucks, Scouts team up

A Thin Mint Bravas dog?

OK, so that might be a bit crazy, but the Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana will kick off Food Truck Fridays this week with Fort Wayne food trucks offering Girl Scout-themed selections.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fridays through Sept. 27 (except Aug. 30) at Dupont Office Park, 10008 Dupont Circle Drive E. Participating trucks include Affine, Bravas, The Getaway Grill, JumBys JoiNt, Ragin’ Cajun, Spicer’s Food Truck and Whip & Chill.

Hog roast fundraiser

The Northeast Indiana Deaf Awareness Council is hosting a hog roast and silent auction Saturday to raise money for the annual Deaf Santa event.

The event will begin at 11 a.m., with bidding closing at 4 p.m., at the Conklin Pavilion at Shoaff Park, 6401 St. Joe Road, and will feature a corn hole tournament and bingo. The hog roast costs $7 for adults, $5 seniors (55 and older) and $3 for children younger than 12. Drinks will be available for purchase.

Deaf Santa gives deaf children the opportunity to meet Santa Claus and tell him what they want for Christmas with sign language.

Around town

•Deli 620 has expanded its hours – and its menu. From 8 to 11 a.m. weekdays, the downtown restaurant, 620 S. Calhoun St., is serving breakfast fare such as a smoked salmon sandwich, build-your-own omelets and egg croissants. Prices range from $4.50 to $6.95.

•Offering a taste of Thailand, India and Myanmar, Son Sea Yar is gearing up for an Aug. 10 opening. The restaurant, 5527 S. Anthony Blvd., is in a shopping center just south of Paulding Road.

•After experiencing some delays, Rollie Dimisiaris hopes to open the doors to Sweet Sanity Ice Cream by mid-August. The shop at 15512 Old Lima Road, Huntertown, will feature 16 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream, soft serve ice cream and 30 toppings. A nod to Dimisiaris’ Greek heritage, a baklava sundae and baklava ice cream are on the menu.

Hours, subject to change, will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
