When it comes to drawing Hoosiers for statewide events, Fort Wayne is geographically challenged. Conference planners choose Indianapolis for its central location as much as for its attractions.
The pitch Allen County Republicans – party Chairman Steve Shine, in particular – put together to land next years Indiana Republican Convention is a testament to their hard work and Fort Waynes progress in creating a first-class conference venue. Parkview Field, the Embassy Theatre, the Botanical Conservatory and a growing collection of downtown restaurants and nightspots can proudly compete with Indianapolis sites and more.
About 2,000 GOP delegates are expected to attend the two-day conference next June at the Grand Wayne Center. It follows last years Indiana Democratic Party convention, which won rave reviews from delegates and is estimated to have contributed $300,000 to the local economy.
When the GOP comes to town next June, the entire community should be prepared to welcome the delegates and show them why Fort Wayne is worth the trip.
