1 dead after crash into Maumee River

A man died after his vehicle crashed into a bridge and came to rest in the Maumee River early Saturday, the Fort Wayne Police Department said.

Police were called to the area of Coombs and Herbert streets north of East Washington Boulevard in reference to a personal injury accident. Witnesses told officers the car had crashed into the bridge and was in the river, police said.

Members of the Fort Wayne Fire Department's Dive Team located the man, who was unresponsive, and transported him to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

The Allen County Coroner's Office has not released his name or exact cause of death. The case remains under investigation.
