BBB warns of Clearing House scam

Scammers claiming to be with Publishers Clearing House have called at least one area resident and promised a $700 million prize and new car if the resident would first pay taxes on the “winnings,” the Better Business Bureau warned Thursday.

A local credit union employee reported the scam to the BBB Serving Northern Indiana after a member came to the credit union seeking a $4,000 loan to pay the scammers.

“In our experience, there have never been any occurrences of these Publishers Clearing House calls being authentic,” the BBB said in a statement. “Certainly, PCH does award prizes, but they do not do so in this manner. No phone calls are ever made, and never is any money requested before a product such as a car or cash is delivered.”

In this case, the scammer received hundreds of dollars from the victim in the form of a prepaid Visa card before the scam was discovered.

The Better Business Bureau said anyone who has lost money in this or a similar scam should file a police report.

Anyone who receives a suspicious phone call asking for money should report it to the local BBB by calling 260-423-4433.
