Officers give out sweet tickets to kids on bikes

City officials announced a new program Thursday to promote bike safety among children.

The “I Got Caught” program gives 400 Zesto coupons to Fort Wayne police officers. When those officers see children wearing helmets while riding their bicycles, they can be rewarded with the coupon, worth one free small ice cream cone at any of Zesto’s four locations.

Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry said the idea came in an email from a resident who had seen a similar program in another city. Police Chief Rusty York said the program not only promotes bike safety for children, but also creates an opportunity for children to have a positive interaction with police officers.
