Officer cleared in Paulding police-action shooting

A Paulding County, Ohio, man was shot earlier this month after he barricaded himself in a home, armed with handguns, and the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office has cleared an officer who shot him.

Allen County, Ohio, deputy Gary Hook properly followed standard policies and procedures, the Paulding County sheriff said.

The shooting was investigated by the Van Wert County sheriff’s detective bureau. Its report has been turned over to the Paulding County prosecutor for possible charges. The next scheduled session of the county grand jury is Aug. 8.

Officers went to a home in the 4000 block of County Road 95 at 9:11 p.m. July 3 on a call about a man who was believed to be suicidal and armed with a gun.

After several hours of negotiations, members of the Allen County (Ohio) Sheriff’s Office SWAT team entered the home and the man fired his weapon at officers, police said at the time.

The injured man was taken to a hospital to be treated for the injuries, police said.
