TinCaps starter Max Fried (4-5) went six innings, giving up five hits and four earned runs, but he also walked five while striking out six.
The TinCaps took a 2-0 lead in the second, but the Whitecaps (49-53, 16-16) scored twice each in the fourth and the fifth to take a 4-2 advantage.
Fort Wayne also scored a run in the seventh.
The Whitecaps’ Jake Thompson (1-3) allowed five hits in five innings, struck out four and didn’t walk a batter.
West Michigan had two players on rehabilitation assignment again from the Detroit Tigers in second baseman Omar Infante and relief pitcher Darin Downs.
