There was no abduction in Sycamore Hills on Tuesday, but a misunderstanding made it seem that way for a little while.

Shoplifting sparks abduction scare at pool

A misunderstanding sent city police officers rushing to the Sycamore Hills pool Tuesday, where reports of a child being abducted led to a man in custody for shoplifting.

At about 11:50 a.m., police received a call about a shoplifter fleeing from Connolly's Do It Best Hardware, 10301 Illinois Road, said Officer Raquel Foster, Fort Wayne police spokeswoman.

Foster said store employees provided a description of a man who had picked up items in the store, then fled with a young child in his arms after being confronted by store personnel.

Eight minutes later, a security guard working at Sycamore Hills Golf Club, 11836 Covington Road, saw a man running by the pool with a young girl in his arms, Foster said.

The guard, thinking the child was being abducted from the nearby pool, called 911.

Several officers working at an event at the golf club then rushed to the area, took the man into custody in connection with the attempted shoplifting and discovered the child was his, Foster said.
