AKRON, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio zoo has landed a new giant Pacific octopus to replace a recently deceased octopus that was one of the zoo's most popular attractions.
Officials at the Akron Zoo say that Cora the octopus died July 6 from what appears to be natural causes. Her age was unknown.
The new octopus is smaller than Cora, weighing about 8 pounds. Cora weighed about 20 pounds.
Cora was the star attraction at the zoo's reef exhibit.
She gained some fame after she chose her own name last year using a tentacle to select one of three balls containing name submissions from the public.
The Akron Beacon Journal reports that the zoo plans to hold a similar naming contest for the new octopus.
