Ball named Indiana baseball player of year

Ex-Norwell star VanMeter 2nd

New Castle’s Trey Ball was selected Friday as the baseball Player of the Year, which was given out by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association.

The news was confirmed on Ball’s Twitter account, where he wrote: “A Big thank you to the Indiana High School Baseball Association for selecting me Mr. Baseball inIndiana! Beyond speechless and honored!”

Josh VanMeter of Norwell, who led the Knights to the Class 3A state championship, finished second for the award.

VanMeter, a fifth-round draft pick of the San Diego Padres, has already begun his professional career. So has Ball, a first-round pick of the Boston Red Sox.

Ball was 6-0 with a 0.76 earned-run average and 93 strikeouts, while batting .330 with 10 home runs and 29 RBI forNew Castle.

VanMeter was 14-1 with a 1.40 ERA and 115 strikeouts, and he batted .450 with nine home runs and 36 RBI.
