Mad Ants assistant working with Pacers

– While his head coach moved on, Mad Ants assistant coach Steve Gansey moved south.

Gansey is spending time with the Indiana Pacers at the Orlando (Fla.) Summer League. He was invited to help coach the team by Pacers assistant coach Dan Burke.

“It’s going great,” Gansey said in a phone interview Wednesday. “It’s a great learning experience for myself. I’m trying to learn as much as I can from as many coaches as possible.”

Gansey has contributed quite a bit – more than he expected – and his first experience with a NBA organization has been thrilling.

“I helped out in practice, and they really gave me a voice in practice,” Gansey said. “It’s been an unbelievable experience, and I’m having a ball coaching these guys.

“The Pacers organization is top-notch. Class. They do everything right. Every single person here is wonderful and very respectful.”

Gansey, who was the interim Mad Ants coach in 2011-12, is under consideration for the head coaching job in Fort Wayne. Every opportunity he gets to work with different organizations helps build his résumé, not just for a potential spot with the Mad Ants, but other teams.

And this week in Orlando has helped him build a foundation for his biggest goal – an NBA coaching gig.

“This is my first time ever with a NBA team, being around them on a day-to-day basis,” he said. “I would love to work for the Indiana Pacers one day.”
