Sandra D’s expanding its menu

Menu changes don’t come often at Sandra D’s Italian Garden.

The Auburn restaurant set up its kitchen in 2001 and is rolling out just the third change, but owner Sandra Dillinger thinks it’s a good one.

Getting a permanent spot is a popular special – the Seafood Lazagna. The dish features scallops and shrimp, a blue crab cream sauce and fresh asparagus garnish. Served with a garlic breadstick and soup or salad, the price varies on market but is currently $17.99.

A popular menu item – Sandra D’s Gourmet House Salad – is also moving to the dinner menu. The larger portion ($9.99) features romaine lettuce, tomatoes, red onion, crispy pancetta, dried cranberries, toasted almonds and a creamy raspberry almond dressing.

Among the other new items are handmade ravioli ($9.99), Pollo Caesar Panini and Bentley’s Smother Burger, which features a homemade bun.

Sandra D’s Italian Garden, 1330 S. Main St. in Auburn, is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Saturday, opening at 11 a.m. Reservations are required after 4 p.m.; call 260-927-7282. The restaurant is also open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday.

Shop, eatery to close

Citing lack of space and time, the owners of Honey on the Table have decided to close the restaurant and market.

Pamela Downs and Lisa Williams opened the space at 2461 Hobson Road in 2011, selling sandwiches, soups, baked goods and specialty market items such as tapenade, mustards and olive oils.

The last day for operation is July 26, and market items will be sold at cost.

Market hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Café hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

New coffee shop

Smoothies made with organic fruit and shakes, with a vegan ice cream option, are just part of the expanded drink options at the new Pembroke Espress.

The coffee shop, an expansion of Pembroke Bakery, is in its third week of operation in the Star Bank Building, 127 W. Berry St. In addition to coffee drinks, smoothies and shakes, grab-and-go sandwiches and fresh pastries such as cinnamon rolls are available for those looking for a quick lunch.

Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. To serve folks who might be downtown for the Fort Wayne Newspapers Three Rivers Festival parade, it will be open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Chef opens food truck

Chef Eric Spicer is no stranger to gourmet food. But this time it’s burgers rather than seared duck.

The one-time chef at Hartley’s Place, which closed in 2009, is operating a new food truck that offers upscale dishes with street-fair flair. Burgers feature sweet onion-and-bacon marmalade, and turkey pastrami melts are made with locally sourced meats and seasonal produce.

He will be among the new names at Foodstock 2013, an event put on by the Fort Wayne Food Truck Association and Downtown Improvement District.

More than 10 mobile units will set up shop at One Summit Square from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 27.

Around town

•La Margarita, 2713 S. Calhoun St., is offering a special during the Fort Wayne Newspapers Three Rivers Festival. A two-item lunch with rice, beans and soft drink is $7.49 plus tax and is available for carry-out and dine-in.

Also available is the restaurant’s summer special – a full rack of baby back ribs with corn on the cob, fries and Texas toast. It costs $14.99 plus tax.

•A new Culver’s location is planned for 6026 Stellhorn Road.

•Red Mango, a frozen yogurt franchise, is expected to open at Jefferson Pointe in mid-August.

•According to the Fort Wayne-Allen County Department of Health, two restaurants have closed – Tran’s Restaurant, 2310 S. Calhoun St., and Vanessa’s Café, 114 W. Columbia St.
