Pence expects next auditor will run in ’14

INDIANAPOLIS – Gov. Mike Pence says he expects whomever he taps for state auditor to seek a full term next year.

Pence announced last week that Auditor Tim Berry will serve as the Indiana Republican Party chairman. Berry is set to leave office with more than a year left in his term.

Pence still expects to wait a few weeks before making that pick. But he said Monday that the person who takes the job will likely run for election on the 2014 ballot.

The move potentially defuses an intraparty battle with Treasurer Richard Mourdock. The former U.S. Senate candidate has been considered a top pick for auditor. But party leaders remain worried that any Mourdock candidacy next year would resurrect his disastrous 2012 Senate run.
