Gas line hit causes service disruption

Construction workers digging in a north Fort Wayne neighborhood struck a natural gas line Monday afternoon, causing up to 80 customers to lose service, a utility spokesman said.

The workers hit the 6-inch steel line and created a gas leak about 3:30 p.m. near North Clinton Street and River Cove Trail, north of Auburn Road, said Nick Meyer, a NIPSCO spokesman.

Fort Wayne firefighters came to the scene, but no evacuations were necessary, Fire Chief Amy Biggs said.

NIPSCO crews arrived to shut off the gas, and about 8:30 p.m. they were able to start repairing the line. In the process, gas service for 70 to 80 customers was shut off, Meyer said.

Those customers were expected to have their service restored Monday night or this morning, he said.

Meyer said the gas lines in the area had been marked before the construction workers, employed by a contracting company, began digging Monday.
