Victim of shooting drives to hospital

911 caller witnessed attack; police believe gunfire drug-related

– City police were investigating a shooting on DeWald Street on Friday after the victim drove himself to a hospital.

A woman called 911 about 11:15 a.m., reporting that she had just seen someone on foot shooting someone in a pickup truck in the 800 block of DeWald, said Raquel Foster, a Fort Wayne police spokeswoman.

Foster said police did not know that anyone had been hit until the victim, a 57-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds, drove himself to a hospital.

He was in serious but stable condition Friday, Foster said.

Police believe the shooting was drug-related, Foster said, based on information earlier in the investigation.

The shooter’s vehicle was described as a light- or silver-colored newer model Chrysler 300.

The shooting was in front of a two-story yellow house near Miner Street. Neighbors sat on their porches after the shooting, watching police as children played on the sidewalks. Several residents said they heard the shooting but assumed it was just fireworks.

Foster said the woman who witnessed the shots being fired called immediately, so police knew right away it was a shooting and not just fireworks.
