HR commission names director

FORT WAYNE – Dawn Cummings has been named executive director of the Fort Wayne Metropolitan Human Relations Commission, the agency announced Wednesday.

Cummings, a staff attorney for the agency since 2007, was appointed to her new position Sunday. She replaces Cathy Serrano, who resigned in May.

Cummings has represented Metro Human Relations in the Indiana Supreme Court, Indiana Court of Appeals and Allen Superior Court, the agency said.

Her primary responsibilities have been in case management and disposition of probable cause cases, and she has conducted training for employers, housing providers and residents of Fort Wayne.

She is also an adjunct professor at Ivy Tech, where she teaches on American government.

Metro Human Relations investigates claims of discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodation and education based on sex, race, religion, disability, ancestry, national origin or place of birth, and sexual orientation.

Serrano replaced Gerald Foday, who was fired as director in 2011 with no explanation. Foday was hired in 2004 to replace Greg Shade, who had been fired after facing an internal sexual harassment investigation.
