Padre no help for TinCaps

Cabrera 0 for 3 in rehab outing

In the end, not even the visiting big stick could break the silence.

San Diego Padres infielder Everth Cabrera, leading off for the TinCaps during a rehab assignment while he recovers from a left hamstring strain, went 0 for 3 with a strikeout, and the TinCaps (46-35) followed his lead, scratching out just one hit in a 2-0 loss to the South Bend Silver Hawks at Coveleski Stadium on Tuesday.

Cabrera leads the National League with 31 stolen bases.

It was the TinCaps’ third straight loss and ninth in 12 games in the second half.

This time it was Brad Allen, Kyle Schepel and closer Jose Jose who quieted the TinCaps, giving up only Rodney Daal’s one-out single in the sixth. Daal advanced to second on a wild pitch with two out, but Cabrera ended the fledgling rally by grounding out to short for the third out.

The TinCaps loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth when Jose hit Daal with a pitch and issued back-to-back walks. But Chris Burke lined out to short.

It squandered a stellar outing for starter Walker Weickel, who went six innings, struck out six and gave up the only three hits.

Notes: Right-handed pitcher Ruben Mejia has been transferred from Double-A San Antonio to Fort Wayne.
