K’s retain rights to 6 players, make qualifying offers

– Daniel Maggio, John Dunbar, Jean-Michel Rizk, Jeremy Gates, Brandon Marino and Lincoln Kaleigh Schrock – received qualifying offers from the Komets before the June 30 deadline.

Teams were entitled to reserve the rights to a maximum of eight qualified players, no more than four of whom could be veterans. A player on an open qualifying offer cannot be traded.

Among the six players to whom the Komets extended qualifying offers, only Schrock and Marino are veterans. Qualifying offers must remain open until Aug. 1, at which time the team may sign the qualified player to any salary or may elect to take no further action.

The rights to non-veteran players who don’t sign are retained by their teams for one playing season. Schrock and Marino, as veterans, would become restricted free agents, which means the Komets would retain the right to match any competing offer within seven days.

Komets general manager David Franke hopes that won’t be necessary.

“I think the guys we qualified were the best or the better players on the team from last year,” he said Monday. “All of the guys we qualified we are gonna try very hard to sign.”
