Columbia City historical marker to honor former Gov. Gates

COLUMBIA CITY – Former Indiana Gov. Ralph Fesler Gates will be honored with a state historical marker placed outside the Whitley County courthouse.

A public dedication ceremony is planned for the marker 1:15 p.m. Tuesday on the courthouse lawn in Columbia City.

Gates served as governor from 1945 to 1949. The Republican is credited with creating the state Department of Veterans' Affairs to help soldiers returning from World War II obtain employment and housing.

The marker notes he also created agencies to promote commerce and aviation and worked to obtain funding to improve roads and highways.

There are approximately 500 historical markers across the state.
