Conservatives huddle to talk challenges

Do you tell people that you are an independent? So you do not like the Democrats or Republicans. What about Libertarians? So you don’t feel like you fit in anywhere regarding whom to represent you or whom to vote for? Where do people like you go? Pro-life? Pro-individual responsibility? You respect and honor the U.S. Constitution. Even the establishment Republicans don’t want you.

You are invited to join a group of people who will discuss issues and beliefs about America and ways to make a difference on the local, state and national levels. Learn about the different ideas that affect the laws and policies in this country. Learn about ways you can join others with similar viewpoints and actions you can take to make your voice heard.

A conference on the challenges for conservatives will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 27 at the Potawatomi Inn at Pokagon State Park. For more information see and search for the July 27 event in “Events Near You” or contact

NRA won’t abide by unreliable data

In regard to “Stifled gun data retarding our safety,” (June 18), about the National Rifle Association blocking research in firearm crimes, there is a good reason for the NRA’s position. The government has a historic bias in reporting and record-keeping.

For example, the form that police officers are required to fill out to turn in to the FBI has a number of boxes to check: “gun used in homicide,” “gun used in robbery,” but there’s absolutely no boxes on that form for “gun used for self-defense,” “gun used to defend property,” “gun used for hunting.”

Also, the government and news media refuse to compare our burglary of occupied dwellings with Europe’s. Occupied dwellings constitute about 2 percent of our burglaries. Mainly this is because criminals don’t want to encounter an armed homeowner. In Europe, the burglary rate of occupied dwellings is in the 50 percent to 60 percent range because of strict gun controls. Burglars there have little reason to fear encountering an armed homeowner.

All of the statistics that are being collected make it look like there are no legitimate uses of firearms. If more accurate records were kept, there might be less objection to research.

Demand government live up to obligations

In recent weeks we have witnessed scandal after scandal and agency after agency abusing the powers bestowed upon them. As such, I have been asking myself, friends and family: Are we a nation governed by the rule of law or like some banana republic? Are we just making up law as we go along?

We have a Constitution in place; it is the foundation which America has built upon and prospered. The sole purpose of this document is not to empower government but to limit government power.

What type of a country are we leaving our children and grandchildren? Do we leave them a strong nation based upon liberty and justice, or do we leave them a debt-infested shell of a nation where every move they make is watched and they are dependent on welfare and assistance?

The choices we make today will be the future of our country. Do we demand good government for all or do we lock ourselves into a downward spiral of divided government designed only to grow and enlarge itself?
