6 K's get qualifying offers

Six Fort Wayne Komets -- forwards Brandon Marino, Kaleigh Schrock, Jean-Michel Rizk and John Dunbar, and defensemen Daniel Maggio and Jeremy Gates -- have received valid qualifying offers from the club by Sunday's deadline, the ECHL said today.

Each team was entitled to reserve the rights to a maximum of eight qualified players, the league said in a statement. It said no more than four could be veterans with 260 regular-season professional hockey games played.

Players who receive such offers cannot be traded, and those who already signed a contract by Sunday did not need to receive an offer, the statement said.

By extending the offers, it said, the Komets retain the rights to veterans until Aug. 1, at which time the veterans become restricted free agents and may be signed by any ECHL team; the Komets have the right to match any offer. They retain the rights to non-veterans for one season.

Veterans not signed by Aug. 31 become unrestricted free agents, the league said.
