How the Dow Jones industrial average fared Monday

By The Associated Press

The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index gained as investors judged that the economy still isn't growing fast enough for the Federal Reserve to ease back on its stimulus program. Reports on U.S. manufacturing and construction spending added to evidence that the economy is growing steadily, but modestly.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 65.36 points, or 0.4 percent, to 14,974.96.

The Standard & Poor's 500 gained 8.68 points, or 0.5 percent, to 1,614.96.

The Nasdaq composite index rose 31.24 points, or 0.9 percent, to 3,434.49.

For the year so far:

The Dow is up 1,870.82, or 14.3 percent.

The S&P 500 is up 188.77 points, or 13.2 percent.

The Nasdaq composite is up 414.98 points, or 13.7 percent.
