FORT WAYNE – A woman in her south-side home discovered two live hand grenades Saturday morning when she opened a bag that belonged to her ex-husband, Fort Wayne police said.
The woman reported her find to police shortly before 9 a.m., and officers were sent to her house in the 4500 block of Winston Drive, south of McMillen Park, said officer Jason Anthony, a police spokesman.
A bomb squad technician determined that the grenades were live and took them into police custody, Anthony said.
The woman told police the grenades were not hers and that they were in her ex-husband’s bag. Her ex-husband, who no longer lives with her, was not around when police came to retrieve the grenades, Anthony said.
As of Saturday afternoon, investigators had not spoken with the woman’s ex-husband, and no arrests had been made, Anthony said.
Federal law prohibits civilians from possessing hand grenades.
