Marker to honor former governor

A historical marker in honor of the late Gov. Ralph Gates will be dedicated Tuesday in Columbia City.

The dedication ceremony will begin at 1:15 p.m. on the Whitley County Courthouse Lawn.

Gates, who was born in Columbia City in 1893, was Indiana governor from 1945 to 1949.

It will be the first marker to be installed in Whitley County since 2001 and will be placed next to the marker memorializing former Indiana Gov. and U.S. Vice President Thomas Riley Marshall.
