Blaze destroys home off Hillegas

No one was hurt in a blaze that destroyed a house early Friday just west of Fort Wayne.

Chief Brian Gillett of the Washington Township Fire Department said firefighters were called about 2:30 a.m. to the 3900 block of Irene Court, near Hillegas Road and West State Boulevard.

The single-story, ranch-style house was engulfed in flames, and rounds of ammunition in a breezeway or garage of the house were exploding, Gillett said.

No one was home at the time, and no injuries were reported, he said.

The closest hydrant was on Hillegas Road, so firefighters used tankers to carry water to the burning house. It took about 45 minutes to bring the flames under control.

Southwest Allen County, Huntertown and Fort Wayne fire crews helped extinguish the blaze. The house was a complete loss, he said.

The cause remains under investigation.
