Neglect charge nets probation; jail time lifted

A 20-year-old Fort Wayne woman was sentenced Friday to two years on probation for neglect of dependent.

That charge, along with one of promoting prostitution, stemmed from a February arrest involving Sydney Williams and a 17-year-old girl. Williams told police she was prostituting herself because she needed diapers for her baby. The 17-year-old girl was in her care while the teen’s mother was in jail.

Williams, of the 700 block of Lawton Place, pleaded guilty to the Class D felony charge of neglect in Allen Superior Court, but the charge of promoting prostitution, a Class C felony, was dismissed.

Allen Superior Court Magistrate Samuel Keirns sentenced Williams to three years in prison, but suspended the time, and ordered her to serve two years on probation.
