    Wayne football coach Scot Shaw was honored as the Indianapolis Colts high school Coach of the Week. The first-year coach led the Generals to a thrilling 35-34 win over North Side on Friday.

AWP advances, other notes

The AWP 7-on-7 high school football team finished 4-0 in pool play at the IMG National Championship on Saturday in Bradenton, Fla.

AWP (30-2) beat CRA from Washington D.C. 29-8, Michigan Elite 20-17, La Villa from Texas 36-32 and Florida Fire 28-23 to advance to today's double-elimination round as the No. 4 seed.

AWP reached the quarterfinals of the 2012 tournament.

"We're looking for nothing short of a championship here, and we've been preparing for about a year now," Carroll senior defensive back Drue Tranquill said in a news release. "They did a great job last year of setting the stage and raising the bar high, but we're looking to exceed that this year."

South Side defensive back Donovan Clark led AWP with three interceptions.

Also, at the Notre Dame National 7-on-7 tournament, Bishop Dwenger went 1-3, while at a 7-on-7 tournament at Pike, Columbia City went 4-2 and East Noble was 3-3. Both teams advanced to the Final Four, with East Noble losing to Pike and Columbia City falling to Ben Davis. East Noble won the pool play matchup between the two schools.

Canterbury grad moves on

Canterbury graduate Patrick Downs beat Piotr Jakimczuk from Toledo, Ohio, 6-0, 6-0 to advance at the USTA Midwest Sectional Qualifying Tournament in Cincinnati.

Downs will play Forrest Edwards from Franklin, Tenn., in Sunday's second round with a chance to advance further with a win.

Warsaw grad 9th at juniors

Warsaw graduate Jake Poyner finished ninth in the 1,500 meter in the USA Junior Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Poyner finished in 3 minutes, 56.39 seconds. Stanford's Justin Brinkley won in 3:46.64.

Poyner is a Wake Forest recruit.
