Coliseum parking cost to rise

FORT WAYNE – The cost to park at Memorial Coliseum will be going up in the fall.

Starting Sept. 1, patrons will pay $5 a vehicle to park at the arena and expo center, general manager Randy Brown said.

Brown said rates have not increased in seven years, despite rising costs, but the board that runs the county-owned facility reluctantly voted Wednesday to increase them because it has little choice.

Health insurance costs have increased 40 percent since 2011, he said, and may go up further as the Affordable Care Act is implemented. Other expenses, such as utilities, have gone up as well.

“We’re very sensitive to the economy and the needs of our guests,” Brown said.

Brown said that by comparison, parking at the Coliseum is still a relative bargain. He said parking at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, where the Pacers play, costs $20 per vehicle.

“Of course, our goal is not to have even average prices. We want to stay as low as possible,” Brown said.
