DAYTON – TinCaps closer Roman Madrid said his Midwest League All-Star game experience was incredible.
And for Madrid, one of four selections from Fort Wayne for the Eastern Division team, it was about more than baseball.
The Eastern and Western teams, composed of 17 pitchers and 18 position players each, took part in a block party and autograph signing Monday at Fraze Pavilion.
It was fun, man, Madrid said. Just getting to see that many people coming out, just getting to be an All-Star, is an amazing experience.
They fed us well, they took great care of us. I’m just thankful I got to be a part of it.
Madrid, along with pitcher Joe Ross, catcher Dane Phillips and first baseman Luis Tejada, played a part in those festivities as well as the game at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday.
Ross, who threw in the second inning Tuesday, said the relaxed atmosphere allowed him to catch up with old friends he has competed with and against in the past.
It was cool having that block party, said Ross, who gave up two runs on three hits in his inning for the Eastern All-Stars. It’s just cool to get to see some of my friends from other teams that are out here.
It’s a great opportunity to play. It’s a lot of fun.
Few fireworks in Home Run Derby
The Home Run Derby didn’t have much excitement.
Even with a guy named Rock Shoulders participating.
The Eastern Division beat the Western Division 19 home runs to 13 in the competition.
Jesse Winker of the Dayton Dragons led all hitters with 10 home runs for the East, and Brandon Drury of South Bend added five.
Shoulders, who plays for Kane County, had four homers for the West, and Beloit’s Renato Nunez tacked on another four.
Ethan Tedder, 11, hit four home runs for the East squad, while Devin Dudley, 12, had five homers for the West Division.
Returning with a bang
The TinCaps start the second half of their season Thursday, and they’ll do so with a bang.
Fort Wayne has scheduled fireworks after games on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday.
All of those matchups start at 7:05 p.m. at Parkview Field.
