Driver of stolen car injured in crash

The driver of a stolen car was injured Sunday afternoon when he went off an Allen County road into a creek, police said.

The car, a Toyota Camry, was reported stolen about 2:30 p.m. from a housing addition near Liberty Mills and Homestead roads in Fort Wayne, city police officer Jeff Burton said.

Two blocks from where the Camry was taken, the driver crashed into a car and fled. The owner of that car followed the Camry but lost it, Burton said.

About 10 minutes later, the Camry collided with another car, this time on Yohne Road, southwest of the city. The Camry then went east on Yohne, and after about a half hour, someone reported that the car was in the creek that parallels the road, Burton said.

The Camry driver was taken to a hospital in serious condition. It was expected he would eventually be arrested. His identity was not released.

Burton said initial reports indicated two people were in the stolen car, but the driver insisted he was alone. As a precaution, firefighters and rescue divers searched the creek for other victims of the crash, but no one was found, said Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel, a spokesman for the Allen County Sheriff’s Department.
