Marion swimmer, 18, drowns at Salamonie

An 18-year-old Marion man drowned Sunday afternoon in Salamonie Reservoir in Huntington County, according to Indiana conservation officers.

Jordan Laute was swimming at a beach when he went past the roped barrier into deep water, witnesses told authorities.

Laute, at first, appeared to be just playing and splashing. Bystanders eventually realized he was in trouble. After he slipped under the water, they searched for him without success, officers said.

Emergency crews were sent to the reservoir at 3:20 p.m., and rescue divers began looking for Laute. Conservation officers, using sonar, found the teenager’s body in 9 feet of water at 6:15 p.m.
