State meet still on Bellmont star's mind

Alexis Harvey and the Bellmont girls track team finished in third place two weeks ago at the girls state track meet in Bloomington without winning an event and being one of the smaller schools.

"A lot of the big teams underestimated us, so to just to be able to get third, and they weren't expecting it made it more exciting," Harvey said Saturday after winning the Star of Stars award for running events at the Midwest Meet of Champions. "For state, it was awesome to come in third. We were hoping for the best meet.

"Our coaches told us we were going to come in either third or second. We were looking forward to that. To do well at state with my times was exciting, but knowing that I would leave (my teammates). But going with this good team, I was looking forward to that."

Bellmont scored 41 points to finish behind Northrop's 60 and Lawrence Central's 51.

Harvey was second in two events, Holly Hankenson had a second and fourth in the hurdles events and was third in the long jump, Bailee Hankenson was 10th in the 800 and the 1,600 relay team was sixth.

"The kids just focused not on rankings and seeds, but on what they wanted to accomplish in the meet," Bellmont coach Carl Risch said of the state meet. "Alexis and the other girls down there just stepped up and did their thing."

At the 2013 Midwest Meet of Champions on Saturday at Northrop, Harvey won the 200 meters, the 400 relay and was second in the 100.

"After seeing her finish first in the 100 and 200 over four years meet after meet, there will be a void next year," Risch said.
