Weather service confirms 5 tornadoes in northwest Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The National Weather Service says at least five tornadoes touched down in northwest Ohio during violent midweek storms.

Forecasters have confirmed three tornadoes in Henry County and one each in Wood and Van Wert counties from the storms late Wednesday and into Thursday.

Officials said the first touchdown was a tornado in Willshire in Van Wert County with maximum winds of about 80 mph and the lowest severity ranking of EF-0.

A slightly more intense EF-1 tornado with gusts of 95 mph was reported near Malinta in Henry County. The same storm produced an EF-0 tornado in Malinta and two EF-0 tornadoes in Wood County, in Custar and near Hamler.

The Weather Service said its reports are preliminary.

Power has mostly been restored for tens of thousands who lost it.
