Planning kid-friendly parties

While summer parties are a great way to get the entire family together, it can be a challenge to plan an event that everyone will enjoy when kids and adults are on the guest list.

Interior designer and HGTV “Design Star” fan favorite, Kellie Clements offers these tips for throwing kid-friendly summer parties.

•For a party with lots of kids, use informal seating such as benches, stools or even rugs on the yard with pillows to suggest a picnic feel. All pathways should be well lit and safe for them to move about. Use solar lights such as Tiki brand Flame & Solar Torches instead of open flame torches.

•Set up the backyard with designated areas for specific tasks, including an area for games and activities for kids to enjoy as well as a kid-specific snack and beverage table. This will not only keep kids occupied, but it will also prevent little ones from running around the drink or dining areas for adults.

•Revamp terra cotta pots with chalkboard paint and set them around the party with chalk inside. Kids will have fun writing or drawing whatever they want on the pots. When the event is over, the pots can be reused for the next party or kids can take them home.
