TinCaps win 2 of 3 over Hot Rods

It was billed as a battle of first-round picks – Max Fried of Fort Wayne vs. Jeff Ames of Bowling Green – and Fried got the slight edge Monday afternoon.

And with Fried’s day already done, the TinCaps got a 5-4 victory at Bowling Green, Ky.

Jeremy Baltz, who had a big game at the plate, scored in the top of the eighth inning off Stephen Carmon’s sacrifice fly into right field. That broke open a tied game for the TinCaps (27-22), who won their second straight and took 2 of 3 in the series.

Fried, the San Diego Padres’ seventh overall pick of 2012, pitched four innings and allowed three runs and four hits, while striking out three and walking two.

Ames, the Tampa Bay Rays’ 42nd overall pick of 2011, went five innings, allowing four runs and 11 hits, while striking out two and walking two.

But it was Leonel Campos (1-1), who pitched two scoreless innings with three strikeouts, that got the win. And Marcus Jensen (4-2), who went four innings, got the loss.

Baltz led the TinCaps offensively, going 4 for 4 with a double, an RBI and the game-winning run. Teammate Brian Adams was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Alberth Martinez, Maxx Tissenbaum and Gabriel Quintana all had two hits.

For Bowling Green (29-21), Albert Toles was 2 for 4 with two runs and three stolen bases.
