Purdue Extension offers a wheat growers guide

WEST LAFAYETTE – Purdue Extension has created a new pocket reference guide for wheat growers, covering variety selection, growth stages, insects, diseases, weeds, soil nutrients, planting decisions and harvest.

Purdue Extension agronomist Shaun Casteel says the 2013 Wheat Field Guide is user-friendly. The guide illustrates all growth stages, offers specific herbicide and fungicide application information, and covers potential grain moisture at harvest time. Purdue’s Crop Diagnostic Training and Research Center Director Corey Gerber says the guide has been developed over the past few years.

Casteel says wheat farmers likely will face a later harvest this year due to prolonged cold temperatures into March and April that delayed the break of dormancy and plant development. He says that’s the opposite of what producers faced during last year’s drought.
