Indiana captures Big Ten tourney

Three in-state schools competed in conference championship baseball games Sunday, with mixed results.

Indiana won the Big Ten tournament title, while Notre Dame and Ball State lost in the final games of the Big East and Mid-American Conference tournaments.

The Hoosiers (43-14) grabbed a 4-3 win against Nebraska. The victory all but assured IU will host a NCAA regional. The announcements were made late Sunday.

South Side grad Will Coursen-Carr threw 127 pitches in a nine-inning outing for IU.

IU became the Big Ten regular-season champion and postseason champion for the first time in the same season.

The program’s last outright regular-season title came in 1932, and its last tournament title in 2009 .

The Irish dropped an 8-1 game against Connecticut, ending their season after they hadmade it to the title game as a 7-seed. Notre Dame (34-24) won on a walk-off single Saturday against Pittsburgh to vault itself into the championship game against the Huskies.

The Cardinals (31-24) ended their season after beating Miami (Ohio) and four-time MAC champion Kent State to reach the title game. Bowling Green shut out Ball State 7-0.
