Irish denied spot in NCAA baseball tourney

Notre Dame missed out on a spot in the NCAA baseball tournament when the at-large bids were announced Monday afternoon.

The Irish made their case to play in the field of 64 by reaching the Big East tournament championship game, but they failed to secure an automatic berth with an 8-1 loss to Connecticut on Sunday in Clearwater, Fla.

Notre Dame finished the season at 34-24 and had the No. 32 RPI. The Irish also had eight victories the RPI top 50, including ACC tournament runner-up Virginia Tech, Big 12 tournament champion Oklahoma on neutral fields and two wins over Cal Poly, which is in the RPI top 25.

Notre Dame's strength of schedule (No. 46) was the best in the Big East.

But that wasn't enough to put the Irish into the national tournament.
