Woodlan loses lead, wins game

The Woodlan and Concordia softball teams didn't know a lot about each other before Monday's Leo Class 3A sectional semifinals clash.

"You see them in the paper every Friday in the (area leaders)," said Woodlan senior Logan Smead, who scored the game-winner in a 4-3 win. "We did have an idea from last year, but nothing like knowing exactly what to expect from them. You just have to do what you have to do."

The two teams were scheduled to play each other, but the game was a victim of the poor spring weather and was canceled.

Woodlan went ahead 3-0 before Concordia tied it with three runs in the top of the sixth. Smead got the game-winner just a half-inning later.

Six of the game's seven runs were unearned.

"If you move the ball on Woodlan, you can force mistakes," Concordia coach Jerry Schillinger said. "That's what we were looking to do."
