House fire spreads to 2nd Aboite home

– A blaze burned a house Saturday morning in Aboite Township and spread to a neighboring home before firefighters could douse the flames, Fort Wayne fire officials said.

The fire started at 202 Stormy Ridge Place, a one-story home in the Whispering Meadows subdivision, near Scott and Illinois roads.

Fire crews were dispatched at 8:21 a.m. “Upon their arrival, it was a large working fire, so they had their hands full,” Deputy Chief Mark Nelson said.

Heavy flames were shooting from the attic and attached garage, and the fire had spread to the siding of an adjacent home at 8809 Spring Forest Drive, fire officials said.

Neighbors had alerted the residents, and both homes had been evacuated before firefighters arrived. It took crews about 15 minutes to bring the flames under control, fire officials said.

A firefighter was taken to Lutheran Hospital to be treated for overexertion. He was released after a couple of hours, Nelson said.

Most of the house on Stormy Ridge Place was saved, but the garage and two vehicles were destroyed. Damage to the home on Spring Forest Drive was limited to the exterior.

Investigators concluded an electrical problem started the fire.

While responding to the blaze, a battalion chief was involved in a crash along Illinois Road. Driving a fire department SUV with lights and sirens on, he stopped at an intersection, and after proceeding, another vehicle struck him, Nelson said. No one was injured.
