Fort Wayne-area jobless rate drops in April

State unemployment dipped in April – and metro Fort Wayne did its part to contribute.

The metropolitan area saw the percentage of people without work retreat to 7.6 percent from 8.8 percent in March, according to preliminary figures released Friday from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

Metropolitan Fort Wayne consists of Allen, Wells and Whitley counties.

State joblessness in April dropped to 8.5 percent from 8.7 percent in March.

"April's employment picture is cause for cautious optimism," Scott B. Sanders, commissioner of the state Department of Workforce Development, said in a statement.

"There is quite a bit more work to do, but things seem to be moving in the right direction, as evidenced by the largest drop in the unemployment rate in over a year."
