Stopped Boston Marathon runners invited to return

BOSTON – Boston Marathon organizers say runners who couldn’t finish this year’s race because of the explosions at the finish line can come back next year.

The Boston Athletic Association said people who passed the halfway checkpoint but not the finish line will get a code they can use to sign up in August. Regular registration for the 2014 Boston Marathon is scheduled to start in September.

The invitation applies to more than 5,000 people who were stopped on the course when the race was shut down at 2:50 p.m.

No decision has been made on whether the field will expand to include an expected influx of runners who say they want to run next year to support the race and the city.
