The Deck opens at Gas House

Offering cold drinks, good food and a view of the muddy river – their words, not mine – The Deck at Don Hall’s Gas House, 305 E. Superior St., is now open.

To restate the obvious, the deck attached to the Gas House kicked off its season Tuesday and will offer a limited menu of sandwiches, salads and appetizers. Owner Ben Hall says much of the menu hasn’t changed but a spin on the Hall’s favorite Buster burger makes an appearance. It has more cheese, bacon and is served on a more “upscale” brioche roll, ditching the “middle chip,” as Hall says, or the middle bun.

It opens at 11 a.m. daily Monday through Thursday, the kitchen closes at 11 p.m. and the bar closes at midnight; Friday and Saturday, the kitchen closes at midnight and the bar is open until 1 a.m.; on Sunday, the Deck closes at 9 p.m.

Bloggers sell scoops

The writers and cooks behind The Ginger Kitchen blog ( are putting the pedal to the metal to take their popular ice cream to the masses.

With the help of a bike trailer, Amber and Jon Recker will be making stops at events this summer, including the Bike to Work After Party, which is 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Fort Wayne Outfitters & Bike Depot, 1004 Cass St. From there, they will head to 340 Fairfield Ave. for an event at Wunderkammer from 7 to 9 p.m.

Single servings of Dark Chocolate Cinnamon Cayenne, Orange Lavender with Dark Chocolate Flecks and Strawberry will be available for $3.

Franchisee still sought

It’s been six months since window clings went up on a Jefferson Pointe storefront to tell passers-by that the location had been approved for a Which Wich franchise. More importantly, it was to draw the attention of a potential franchisee.

But a representative for the Dallas-based sandwich chain says an approved franchisee has not been found for the location or another in the area.

The restaurant is known for its customizable sandwiches.

Around town

•Asakusa Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar opened its second location. Hours at 6401 W. Jefferson Blvd. are 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday; 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 5 to 8:50 p.m. Sunday.

•The Mad Anthony Brewery location in Angola on Lake James, 4080 N 300W, is gearing up for opening day, which has not been set. The staff is being trained and putting finishing touches on the location.

•Yoyo’s (Yogurt on Your Own), which has three locations in Fort Wayne, is adding Greek yogurt to its self-serve yogurt options. Flavors include Zeusberries, Java Caramel Cup and Honey Vanilla.
