Area man arrested after barricading himself in home

A Wabash County man was arrested in Steuben County Tuesday after barricading himself in a house south of Fremont, police said.

Wabash County officials told Steuben County they believed Kenneth Eltzroth, 44, of Wabash, was hiding in a house south of Fremont. He was wanted in Wabash County on several drug-related charges and for failing to appear for a jury trial.

When officers went to the home to arrest him, Eltzroth shut all doors and barricaded himself in the home, refusing to speak to officers, police said.

After about three hours with no contact or cooperation from Eltzroth, Northeast Indiana SWAT officers deployed irritant gas in the the home, and Eltzroth surrendered without incident, police said.

He will be turned over to Wabash County to face charges there, police said.
