Jetliner makes safe emergency landing in Cayman
The Associated Press
The Cayman Islands Airport Authority said the flight took off from Miami with 147 passengers. After an unspecified "mechanical problem" was detected, the plane diverted and landed at Owen Roberts International Airport on the territory's main island of Grand Cayman, the authority said.
All airport emergency services were on standby as the American Airlines plane landed. Passengers disembarked and were taken to the airport's departure hall.
Dori Alvarez, a spokeswoman for American Airlines, said the Boeing 737 aircraft was being evaluated by maintenance crews. Another plane was on its way to pick up the passengers and continue on to Panama later Tuesday evening, she said.
