122nd’s Air Park set to open

Fort Wayne’s 122nd Fighter Wing will have a public ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday for its Baer Field Heritage Air Park.

The ceremony will be at 1:30 p.m. at the park adjacent to the Air National Guard base, 3005 Ferguson Road. The park will be open daily to the public from 9 a.m. until dusk.

“We live in a great community that offers our military members tremendous support, and Baer Field Heritage Air Park is a way that we can thank our community members for standing behind us,” Col. David Augustine, commander of the 122nd Fighter Wing, said in a news release.

“We are proud of our heritage and are very excited to share this with the community,” Augustine said.

The park will display aircraft flown by the 122nd Fighter Wing since 1947, including the F-100, F-4, F-84, F-16 and the A-10 Thunderbolt II, which the base currently flies and maintains.

A vehicle representing the Indiana Army National Guard 338th Quartermaster Unit, a tenant at the air base, also will be on display.

The park has a pavilion, playground and parking.

Construction of the park began in 2011.
