5 people, cat escape southeast house fire

Five people and a cat safely escaped a house fire Sunday evening in southeast Fort Wayne, according to the city fire department.

Two adults and three children got out of the small, one-story home at 3016 Alexander St. before firefighters arrived about 6:15 p.m., the department said.

With smoke coming from the front of the house, firefighters went inside to extinguish the flames.

It took 8 minutes to gain control of the fire, which caused moderate damage, the department said.

Firefighters rescued a cat from the home and returned it to its owner.

No injuries were reported.
